Located just north of the AT&T Park, where long-abandoned piers have sprung back to life, the South Beach Harbor Services Building provides a distinctive identity to expanded maritime and public recreational amenities as part of the redevelopment of Pier 40. Its design — inspired by the climate and culture of the region — balances modernity with community interest in the site's maritime history and recreational present. Its site-specific form and allegiance to maritime programming, featuring boating facilities, the South Beach Yacht Club, Harbor Master offices, community room, and public amenities, make it an authentic Bay Area building.

“Here the most aggressive architecture kicks in, as a slatted wall of Brazilian Ipe wood curves out in an arc to screen the building's broad flat facade. The 200-foot-long screen flourish also serves as a nautical allusion meant to evoke how boats are made and how they look.”
