This rehabilitation project brings back former cavalry soldier barracks into contemporary use while preserving its national historic landmark status. The design establishes a new entrance for the three-building complex while sensitively balancing access and fire/life safety compliance measures with preservation mandates and the need to support successful and diverse tenant occupancy over time. Featuring the first living roof in the Presidio, the LEED Gold project dispels a common preconception that historic buildings present obstacles to environmentally-responsible design solutions.
